Palace Theatre, Plymouth. First ever paranormal investigation!

The Palace theatre in Plymouth, Devon has just undergone its very first paranormal investigation which was carried out by the ghostfinder paranormal society.

The Palace Theatre opened in 1898 as a music hall but was damaged by fire only three months after opening, and was re-opened in 1899 as the New Palace Theatre of Varieties. In 1961 it was converted to a bingo hall and continued in this use and as a theatre until 1983 when it became “The Academy” disco and finally operated as the Dance Academy, before being closed after Class A drugs were found on the premises.

The theatre was built in the Flemish Renaissance style, with the interior in an Art Nouveau style, with nautical features. It is now deteriorating while an agreement is reached about its future and it is listed as an “at risk” building. It is a grade II* listed building. It is a focal point for many people and has been for a long time. The site is currently in the process of being renovated with the hope of it living a longer life. The lead was stolen from the roof and that let the rain in to cause large amounts of damage.

The investigation itself began at around 8.30pm on the 13th December 2013. It was a calm night, not too cold and the skies were clear.

The report on the nights events is as follows..

We began with a walk around to get familiarised with the building. It has several floors and lots of rooms. A very impressive building both inside and out.

The atmosphere is incredible as you can still feel the emotions of all the people that have passed through this site. You can almost hear the chatter of the public waiting to go into the main room to watch a show or dance the night away. The thick cloud of sensations floats around from place to place and your mind is left with an impression of a busy coffee shop or an airport terminal. The hustle and bustle of the place still lives on.

We can clearly see the evidence of the theatres previous incarnations throughout the building where some of the original designs are still intact yet other areas have been painted with ‘night club’ colours. A lot of work is needed just to get the place clean and renovation work seems to be extensive yet not impossible.

Some sections leave you speechless whilst others are just run-of-the-mill rooms and offices where residents and workers used to live, roam and play.

With the main CCTV night vision cameras up and rolling we started to do our grouped sessions. We split into two teams. One headed upstairs whilst the other began at rear of, and under, the stage.

The psychics and empaths of the groups were picking up on all sorts of emotions, feelings and people whilst we were there and we tried to ask questions relevant to what they were getting.

We all had some form of recording device, whether it was a digital recorder or video camera. Thermometers, EMF meters, ‘Franks box’ and EMF pumps were also in use.

Each session of investigative recording lasted for around 30 minutes after which we would all meet back at the hub and go over some of the things we’d experienced.

Several knocks and shadow movement had been witnessed up on the top floor. The rooms there overlook Union street and are several floors up so we were able to define that there was no external interference at those points.

On the main floor there is a room off to the side. In here we were all witness to a strong smell of some brand of aftershave. We narrowed it down to be possibly of the type that was popular during the 70’s and 80’s. This smell was fresh and strong and hung around for a good 20 minutes when it rapidly disappeared.

The team upstairs were to encounter this exact same smell for a very brief few moments in the long hallway where the offices were later on in the evening.

We did experience several noises, footsteps, voices and a few movements in the shadows and are hopeful that we’ve caught as much as we can on video and the like. One thing is for sure is that this place is alive with energy. Lots of energy that has been built up over the years and the building needs new energy in order to keep it going in the direction that it was designed for.

There does seem to be some evidence captured on one team members video camera…

In this clip Steve thought he heard some children shouting and was hopeful that the noise was caught on camera, but what was actually caught is completely different to what he heard. The three other members of this team group were at the other end of the upper floor and we can hear the difference with Hella’s voice..

This capture is of a whislte, but nobody seems to have heard it..

In this clip, we hear Andy finishing what he was saying, then Dave speaks, but behind Daves voice there is a female saying something, but it has an almost electronic echo vibrating through the sound.. it does not fit in with the environment

In this short clip, Andy connects with an event and someone seems to be listening in as it appears that we have caught a direct response to the conversation..

Andy speaks, Steve says ‘yeah’ than an EVP is caught that sounds like it is in agreement with all that’s said..

Here Steve and Dave are talking and we hear a man either coughing or saying something…

In this one Hella is asking some questions but before we here Hella ask ‘who are you?’ there is a female voice saying “I am the Queen”… Is this an actress who once played a Queen or could it be the voice of a real queen who maybe was in this area or building at some time in the past? did this spirit know what Hella was going to ask before she asked it?

Rather a regal tone in that voice, wouldn’t you say?

But after all that, did we enjoy the night? Yes we loved it and can’t wait to go back again.. and as much as we do take things seriously, there is always the odd moment you wish never happened or the odd things you say where you open your own mouth and make things even worse for yourself.. to understand this we have to “speak to my box” ….
